My Favorite Uses for Peppermint Oil

Peppermint Oil is very widely used due to its versatility. It has been used in many medications, and its cooling, calming attributes make it a very desireable oil for your collection! And, who can say no to that lovely smell?

What Is Peppermint Oil?

Peppermint oil is extracted from the peppermint plant. The peppermint plant is a hybrid of watermint and spearmint, which are abundantly found in North America and Europe. The peppermint plant is steam distilled to obtain this essential oil.

Uses of Peppermint Oil

Human beings had discovered the numerous benefits of peppermint a long time ago. According to historical accounts, peppermint was used as a herb in various medicines in ancient China, Japan and Europe, and its oil was used in ancient Egypt and Rome.

  • Use for Stomach Problems

Peppermint oil is really beneficial for stomach related problems, such as spastic colon (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), indigestion, functional dyspepsia etc. It is considered a safe alternative to Buscopan, a medicine used to treat spastic colon. It also relieves abdominal pain and bloating, by helping in gas removal from the body.

To treat an upset stomach, add a few drops to a carrier oil (coconut or olive) and rub clockwise on the abdomen.

  • Relieve Muscle Pain

Peppermint oil has natural properties that help in relaxing muscles and reducing pain. According to studies, topical use of peppermint oil can relieve back pain, headache, and soothe sore muscles. It can also work as a painkiller in Myofascial Pain Syndrome and Fibromyalgia.

In addition to the above mentioned uses, peppermint oil is highly beneficial for a variety of other purposes, such as in relieving stress, cold, sinus problems and for enhancing your beauty. However, if you are suffering from any serious health issue, it is advised that you consult a doctor before using any home remedy.
