Spirituality is seeing the world through a different lens by cultivating your mind, body, energy, and emotions and taking them to a higher level of maturity.
It is basically the goal to understand life and this world on a much deeper level. The spiritual journey starts when one tries to find answers to the questions that the human mind has been raising since the beginning: Who am I? Why am I here? Where do I go when I die? Is there a creator?
Spirituality is a broad concept and means different things to different people. Therefore, different people adopt different practices for their own spirituality. Some believe that it can be achieved by becoming part of a religion, by participating in religious practices and by adopting the way of living proposed by that religion.
On the other hand, there are people who prefer a more personal approach, by getting connected with their inner-self and to the Supreme Being within their private lives through practices such as meditation, yoga, going to distant places, and offering private prayers.
When one starts to contemplate these questions, they start a journey on which they start feeling connected with the much larger and united universe, and this connection only keeps getting stronger with time.
Ancient Versus Modern Spirituality
In ancient times, people used to leave their normal life and go to distant and isolated places to develop this connection, but today, many spiritual seekers are choosing a different path. Rather than giving up their present life, they just set aside some personal time daily to achieve awareness, peaceful contemplation of the world and their own selves, and to develop a connection.
Those striving for spirituality tend to increase in respect and love for their fellow man, and that makes it even more important in this day and age. As a people, we need to learn how important it is to love, respect, and forgive each other and spread compassion and hope. Developing human traits within ourselves and learning to live for others is the very first step towards spirituality.
As opposed to material wealth, spirituality can give you a wealth of happiness, contentment, direction, liberty and freedom. It can make you a better, kinder and more sympathetic human being.
Not only is it a way to bring peace within ourselves; but, it can also bring peace to the world, one person at a time. When we learn respect and love for each other, we can feel more content ourselves, and make this world a better place to live.
